ABOUT

Comprehensive
approach to therapy

At SLL Therapy, we believe that a comprehensive approach to therapy is the most effective method for building long term learning and communication skills. In addition to individualized therapy in the areas of speech, language, and literacy, we offer strategy based lessons for those who struggle to learn in a traditional academic setting.

Areas
of Expertise

Speech

Speech therapy is a treatment plan for improving your child’s overall intelligibility by focusing on specific sound errors. The umbrella term Speech Sound Disorders or Delays (SSD) is used to describe difficulties in articulation and phonology, making it difficult to understand what your child is expressing. If you or others are having difficulty understanding what your child is saying, we offer free consultations to determine your child’s individual needs.

Language

Language is an area of speech therapy that is often overlooked, but remains a pivotal skill needed for academic success, learning, and communication. Language therapy involves the practice of accessing and utilizing three major overlapping components: syntax, semantics, and social communication. All of these components are needed in order to have strong skills within the area of language. Difficulties with language can manifest in various ways within social and academic settings. For more information on the impacts of language on academic success, please refer to the FAQS or contact us directly.

Literacy

Literacy does not often come to mind when seeking a speech-language pathologist; nevertheless, reading (and spelling) is a crucial factor in academic success, language, learning skills, and believe it or not, speech! If speech and/or language is impacted, literacy will be impacted as well! Literacy therapy involves developing both word recognition and comprehension which are two essential factors for skilled reading. If you suspect that your child has difficulties with reading or spelling, please refer to our resources or contact us for a free consultation.

Here is what clients have to say about Gaby.

Major Improvements

We got an outstanding report from Russell’s teacher about his progress and confidence in reading and spelling, and even socially. His hard work with Gaby is really paying off. He has really improved. This weekend he read a whole book to me about 30 pages.

I have absolutely no hesitation to recommend Gaby

When Covid hit, our children immediately started zoom classes. As I was watching my children’s agony while dealing with zoom classes, I knew that if the 2020-2021 school year would remain virtual, I would have to think out of the box. As I was researching different homeschooling options, I was so very fortunate to come across Gaby’s name on Facebook. This initiated my journey into homeschooling. After speaking with Gaby on the phone, I knew she would do a wonderful job with my children. I asked her to take on the role of my children’s English teacher. Gaby taught my children for the entire 2020-2021 school year. Gaby was always punctual, caring, organized, warm, and had the proper level of strictness while keeping the class entertaining. She taught two of my children, one in 3rd grade and one in 6th grade. I have absolutely no hesitation to recommend Gaby.
When I asked my children how they felt about Gaby and her teaching, the following are a few things they told me:
The 3rd grader said:
“She was definitely on top of stuff. Won’t stop teaching a particular subject until we know it. She will find a different worksheet to help explain, if we did not understand.
She lets you ask as many questions as you need until you understand.“
The 6th grader said:
“If you don’t understand something, she will keep explaining it in a different way until you understand it. I really liked the way she teaches, which builds on top of what we learned in previous assignments to help us with the following assignment. Everything Gaby taught me helped me get ahead in school and her techniques help me write proper essays in school this year.“

A HUGE confidence boost

My son was receiving speech therapy at school but he was still so difficult to understand. Within only a few months of working with Gaby, we have seen significant improvements in his speech. Family members have also commented on how great he sounds. He is so much more confident in himself and is now more willing to converse with friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your go-to section for finding answers to specific questions.
When should I seek therapy for my child?

I like to tell parents that early identification leads to early intervention. The sooner the better! If you have concerns or were referred to an SLP by your child’s teacher or pediatrician, you want to make sure your child is exposed to a strong foundation for learning whether that is speech, language or literacy.

Do you take insurance?

At this time SLL therapy is private pay only. However, a super bill can be provided upon request in order to submit to insurance for possible reimbursement. If payment is a factor in preventing you from getting care for your child, I am happy to work with you on pricing, as I am a strong advocate for children’s communication needs.

What ages do you work with?

I primarily work with children ranging from 1 year all the way up to high school age.

Where are you located?

For those based in MI, I typically travel to my clients and conduct therapy in their most naturalistic environment, or at a preferred pre-determined location. For those who are more comfortable with tele-therapy or based in NY, I currently conduct sessions via TheraPlatform©, a secure video conferencing and client portal network that is HIPPA compliant.

What are the warning signs of poor/limited early language development?

Although it is easy to compare your child to a “norms” chart, I believe that each child is unique in his/her development and learning. I believe that one size does NOT fit all!  Developmental milestones were developed as guidelines for parents and professionals. Early language development can be based on a variety of environmental and/or acquired factors. If you are concerned about your child’s language development, set up a free consultation! Check out the resources page for more information!

What are the warning signs of language weaknesses in an academic setting?

Here are a few red flags to look out for. Please note that this is a limited list!

  • Overuse of simple or limited vocabulary
  • Word finding difficulties
  • Immature grammar use
  • Limited sound symbol awareness
  • Understanding and using complex sentence structures including conjunctions, clauses, etc.
  • Difficulties with categorization
  • Concrete understanding of vocabulary
  • Difficulty with understanding non-literal language
What are the warning signs of poor/limited literacy skills?

Here are a few red flags to look out for. Please note that this is a limited list!

  • Poor sound symbol awareness
  • Difficulty segmenting and blending sounds/syllables
  • Difficulty rhyming
  • Difficulty spelling
  • Poor sight word recognition
  • A history of SSD
  • Working memory weaknesses
Do I need to have my child assessed before seeking therapy?

Traditionally, a therapy treatment plan is determined based on assessment performance along with other various information from parents, teachers, pediatricians, etc. If your child was previously assessed (within the last year) by another therapist, a treatment plan can possibly be determined depending on the concerns and needs of the child. If no previous testing was conducted, feel free to reach out about information regarding assessment information as they are all unique in nature.
